Commonwealth had seen various changes in the landscaping of the roads and locations in Delhi. One of the major changes that was encouraged and appreciated was the cycle lane that was proposed under the governance of former Chief Minister Sheila Dixit.’ Arvind Kejriwal recently led a cycle rally for the very first time in Delhi. The first ever ‘Car-Free day’ was initiated by Kejriwal to tackle the issue of increasing pollution.
People from all walks of life contributed by their presence in the rally. The rally had taken place between Red Fort and Bhagwan Das Marg. The historic setting in the background added to the thought of clean and pollution free environment. Hundreds of people took part in the event cycling from the 17th century built Red Fort to the World War I commemoration India Gate.
The purpose of this event was to encourage the citizens of Delhi to use public transport. Among the delegates, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, other cabinet ministers, Chief Secretary and bureaucrats also participated in the rally.
Chief Minister of Delhi appealed the participants to make bicycle-riding a daily habit for a good and healthy lifestyle. In a statement, he said “People should leave their vehicles and use public transport. Since pollution is increasing in Delhi, there is a need to run cycle which is also good for health.” Himself a diabetic, Kejriwal has urged the citizens of Delhi to take measures to improve their lifestyles through exercises such as cycling.
AAP government has come up with a new project that will aim at improving and redesigning the roads of the national capital. This step has been taken for safety on roads in Delhi. Earlier concern over road rage and increasing accidents had stirred the matter to take a descision. Car-Free Day, a concept of State Transport Minister Gopal Rai has yet brought forth another trend that will be advantageous for the city and its inhabitants.
