Journalist J Dey, in May 2011, had written an article titled: ‘Did Rajan plan hit on Kaskar?’ Followed by that article a second appeared a month later in June, titled: ‘Rajan gangsters off to ‘pilgrimages’ – Cops say many Rajan gang members are missing from their hideouts in the city.’
The sequence in which these articles released was summed up by Dey’s alleged killing by goons of the gangster.
Chhota Rajan who has been arrested in Bali is presently facing questions by the CBI. So far he has been accused of being the mastermind behind the killing. The charge sheet of the J Dey murder case carries the names of Rajan’s associate who are said to have excecuted Rajan orders. He was allegedly upset that Dey had portrayed him as an “ageing” gangster with a weakening clout.
Special Public prosecutor Raja Thakare said, “When he is brought to India, he will have to be produced before the court in this case.” Trial in the J Dey case is currently under the special MCOCA court of the high-security Arthur Road jail. Rajan faces extremely outrageous crimes of murder, extortion, smuggling and drug trafficking.
“There are about 25 cases against him at the Crime Branch alone. His extortion business spanned the whole of Mumbai. Wherever there was construction business, he used to issue extortion threats,” said a former Crime Branch officer.
Following the murder of J Dey,Rajan left evidence as he gave an interview to a television channel claiming responsibility for J Dey’s murder. This “extra judicial confession” will prove to be an asset as “the interview can be treated as admissible evidence,” the former officer said.
A bitter gang war took its course after Rajan parted ways with the don Dawood Ibrahim. The unleashing of the war became a threat to his life in Dubai. Therefore he set up bases in Bangkok and Malaysia, shifting between the two.
